Hi Neal,
In short I would say you need SQL Per Processor licensing (Standard or Enterprise Edition) and a SharePoint Internet Site Standard or Enterprise License, the secret is to choose the appropriate Server Editions i.e. Standard or Enterprise, the difference in pricing is in the tens of thousands of dollars, I recommend reading through the product specs before making a decision. Regarding Software Assurance the main benefit will come from the DRP free licenses that you can utilize.

Would be interested in your insight on licensing requirements for externalizing solutions (i.e. SQL Server, SharePoint, etc.) under an EA agreement and if the implications or opportunities presented by Software Assurance.

Thank-you

I think one very important aspect you forgot to mention is that there are NO downgrade rights to Partner licenses.

This means any organisation that wishes to utilise this benefit will need to upgrade at every release. This should be obvious as one of the main reasons Microsoft is so generous with their licenses is in order to encourage their Partners to sell what they use and use what they sell.

In addition these licenses are for internal use only and therefor might not be applicable to many database and business functions.

Good article Daryl and a common circumstance. We additionally frequently find Microsoft "Business Partners" who have never taken the step to become part of the Microsoft Partner Network (although typically carry all of the qualifications). This actually prompted us to add to our service line a flat fee service for helping these companies navigate the steps to becoming part of the Partner Network and understanding their licensing grants.

An important item to note is that these license grants can only be used while your Partner Network subscription is current and does not carry downgrade rights. You must be running current technology (there is a window allowing for upgrade at the change of versions). Also, Microsoft has recently added the option to obtain a report online of your licensing rights. Since various competencies come with their own additional grants this is very helpful in keeping current across all of a companies rights.

I think that MS has finally heard its customers and reacted to Oracle´s offering.
It is a way to gain market share.
A Net Present Value analysis should be made to calculate true savings of yearly True-Up vs True Up at the end of the 3 year agreement.
Would it make sense to offer something similar for Office or Desktops?

I presume the pricing indicated is street price, and depending on the level of your agreement the pricing may vary based on either your select model or entreprise model.. But none the less a simplistic view and easily understandable.

I agree that it is not a automatic savings that you will receive from Microsoft, but if you are looking for a leverage point in the negotiations this is a good place to start off from.
